one man dead, one man unable to stop replaying MTV2 in his head and two others suffering from spontaneous, spasm-inducing visions, Guided by an unspoken mutually accepted desire to find answers, they set out on a musical crusade……
From then on Zapped By A Million Volts’
insatiable appetite has led them across
Northern music scene providing support for<br scheduled for release mid-July, advanced copies are already been played on a weekly basis in alternative club nights across the North as well as in the London-based, NME-acclaimed Camel Club – where the band are due to play a headline gig.

***UNCLE JOHNNY ***

The creating our sound. At the moment this is heavily infulenced by the indie scene "artic monkeys" but some band influence derives from the blues. We have been gigging as much as possible recently tyring to promote our own music, our main aim.

PIECE HALL Sunday 9th July between 12 and 5.30.

A Summer Doghouse Sunday

The doghouse, Halifax’s eclectic live music venue & record label is organising its first outdoor gig in the fantastic setting of the Piece Hall. With support from Calderdale MBC and White Light, the gig takes place on Sunday 9th July between 12 and 5.30. Even better news is that it’s free admission to the gig!

The line-up for the event aims to feature some of the creative talent from the area. It will include:

Tenth Leper
Newdarkage
Jonjo Feather
Edward Molby
Uncle Johnny
Revelator Band

The doghouse venue is run by Michael Ainsworth & Rothwell Shackleton. Michael said,”we are really pleased to hold our first ever outdoor gig & we are grateful to the support of White Light and Calderdale MBC who have made it possible. We had hoped to hold an outdoor gig last year but couldn’t find a suitable venue, so having the Piece Hall is an extra bonus”.

Shack went onto say, “we deliberately are not making a charge for the event because we wanted to attract as many people to the gig as possible. Families will be especially welcome”.

The doghouse also recently released its first CD, a compilation CD featuring some of the best artists to play at the doghouse during the first year including, Edward Molby, The Revelator Band, JonJo Feather, Modeliste, Uncle Johnny & NewDarkAge. The CD is available in local record shops & on-line via the soon to be launched new website www.doghouseuk.com .

If you want further information/interviews please contact:

Michael – 077881 40682
www.hxmusic.blogspot.com
www.doghouseuk.com (launched July)
NewDarkAge

Jonjo Feather

Edward Molby

Revelator Band

Uncle Johnny

Tenth Leper

7th APRIL Royal Oak

iLiKETRAiNS - Biography

Since their first gig in February 2004, iLiKETRAiNS have crept in as a formidable part of the fertile Leeds scene, creating individual musical soundscapes that have stood them apart from their contemporaries. After three self-released demos, iLiKETRAiNS released their first single on the Leeds-based Dance_To_The_Radio label. It was the dark, brooding murder ballad 'BEFORETHECURTAiNSCLOSE' and sold out in the first week earning them strong praises in the national and regional press.

2005 saw them play the Carling Leeds Festival as well as a triumphant appearance at Manchester's In The City, which led to the follow up single on the new Kids label in October 2005. 'A ROOK HOUSE FOR BOBBY', was described by Room Thirteen as "an unequivocal masterpiece" and by Sandman as "nothing short of phenomenal". It sold out in two days and found them fans from all over Europe. Decked out in matching British Rail uniforms and backed by films of trains, snow and chess from their antiquated projectors, their live shows are now starting to fill venues around the UK via webzines and support from the likes of NME and The Fly. Metro warned that 'you should be sensing their chilling presence soon'. iLiKETRAiNS finished their year touring with Redjetson and ¡Forward,Russia! and recorded an XFM session for John Kennedy.

They are back in the studio in early 2006. Together they are a tightly-knit, talented and ambitious Rock’n’Roll three-piece, able to shift their musical soundscapes from pop to prog in one smooth movement.

“Sharp, wonderfully hypnotic and bloody-mindedly intense rock music!”

- Ronan Munro - NME
Based in Leeds after initially meeting on a bus in Clapham back in 1999, they have consistently dazzled audiences with their awesome and ever-evolving live show. Following a single on Shifty Disco and a debut album with Beggars Banquet, The Somatics have more recently featured on the nationally acclaimed Dance to the Radio and Engine Room compilations. Now, the band have just completed their ‘magnus opus’ long-player ‘Dynamo Mercurial’, due for release Summer 2006. ‘Elemental’ is the first single to be taken from the album.

Recorded and produced at their own studio ‘The Attic’ on the outskirts of Leeds by guitarist Richard Green (formerly the main songwriter behind cult-indie heroes Ultrasound, and also responsible for producing Leeds band ¡Forward, Russia!’s debut single ‘Nine’ last year), the band have use vintage equipment in an attempt to rediscover the classic analogue sounds of their heroes such as Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and King Crimson. On even the first listen, it is clear that their perfectionist attitude in the studio has paid off!
“Whilst their style’s quite obviously different, The Somatics make use of the same mind-blowing technical proficiency one-in-a-million-bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience possessed. I’m not into idols but Mr Green is a modern-day guitar hero as far as I’m concerned. Enough said.”
- Will Gray, Sandman Magazine

Elemental, with its invigorating guitar-lines, lush harmonies and an epic, cascading chorus, is a piece of psychedelic indie genius, and a further step in the band’s quest to fulfil their namesake ‘Somatic’, meaning “of body, not of mind” – to create and perform music naturally, physically, through their own innate talents and intuition.

“As they get more and more determined to put the highest standards of perception and execution into their sixties-referred sound, they are not far short of something that deserves a stadium for its workplace”
- John Hepworth - www.leedsmusicscene.net
The Somatics new single 'Elemental' available 27th February.
http://www.the-somatics.com
http://www.myspace.com/thesomatics

Gina Dootson is all about songs. High quality, well crafted, skilfully presented songs. The presentation is understated, simple and, above all, sincere. Occasionally one sees an artist that obviously lives and breathes the songs they present and Gina is one such artist. Hailing from Yorkshire, Gina has spent some time developing a repertoire of material and is now stunning audiences across the country. Whether it is solo (Gina is a highly accomplished guitarist and pianist) or with her full band there is an honesty and refreshing quality to her performance that compels audiences.

Unexploded Shells consists of Tim Corbridge (lead guitar), Jon Archer (drums), Tom Goodhand (vocals, guitar), Mark Sturdy (vocals, guitar) and Steve Walsh (bass). They came together about a year ago in Leeds, having met through the city’s famously incestuous underground network of fanzines, bands and women’s clothing shops.

Together they make a sound via the medium of hitting stuff, strings, electricity, eccentricity and vocal chords. Shared influences are few and far between, but include Vic Godard, Super Furry Animals, White Stripes, Roxy Music and Miles Davis. You wouldn’t know. Or maybe you would.
.
Since starting they’ve played quite a lot of gigs and occasionally been spoken about in a favourable manner. Some examples:

"ace... wire meets kinks" - Nick Scott, Rebellious Jukebox
"rhythmic guitars and a cold, dead pan vocal delivery... a breath of fresh air" – Chris Oddy, The Music Guru
"thrillingly acidic, skewered and abrasive... fiercely confident, asymmetrical, pounding backdrop for the observant and nonplussed vocal stylings" – Lauren Strain, Leedsmusicscene.net
"...enjoyable... ambitious... students" - Ryan Butcher, Heathenangel.co.uk
"...swine" - Nigel Blackwell, Half Man Half Biscuit

They’ve recently released their first EP, which was recorded a few months back at Ghosttown Studios in Hyde Park. You can buy it in Leeds from places like Jumbo, Crash and Borders, or listen to the tracks on the band’s website at www.unexplodedshells.info

FEB 3rd Royal Oak

Vinny Peculiar
Manchester’s other punk poet Vinny Peculiar is a singer-songwriter of expertly crafted vignettes of the ironies, agonies and ecstasies of every day existence. A flamboyant purveyor of story based songs and poems his muse is equally suited to the acoustic intimacy of theatre’s as well as fronting a band and he has toured with acts as diverse as British Sea Power, Malcolm Middleton and Edwyn Collins. Vinny is a regular compere on the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage and has released four critically acclaimed albums. He was recently crowned ‘the Tony Hancock of pop’ by UNCUT MAGAZINE and his next album, due October 2005, will feature the sublime talents of former Smiths Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce and Craig Gannon.

RANDOM HAND
2005 was a great year for Random Hand. Tours with Zen Baseballbat (MoonSka Europe), Sonic Boom Six (MoonSka Europe), Babar Luck (ex King Prawn) and Catch-It Kebabs (Do The Dog records) as well as an 18 date solo National tour in March/April and an upcoming tour in 2006 with The Planet Smashers (Canada) have firmly established Random Hand as one of the hottest unsigned properties going.

With the support from Punktastic.com (the UK’s largest Punk website), TheSka.co.uk, (the UK’s largest Ska website) and triumphant appearance at the UK’s largest punk festival, ‘Wasted 2005’, have built a firm foundation on which to build and promote.

Their latest demo entitled ‘On The March’ has seen the Random Hand sound develop into something nearing their live show, produced by TimG (whos work has been seen on MTV around the world) this CD has been described by Barney from UKSkaScene as ‘System of a Capdown’ and by Ben on Punktastic.com who agrees by saying ‘Random Hand is a genuinely rare band’.

The Talk Magazine said of ‘On The March’: ‘Like I would imagine a Psychedelic acid trip on a crazy fairground ride; fast lights, crazy emotions, excitement, heightened senses, this CD blows you away. From the outset, this band screams unique. Labelled as "UK Ska/Metal/Rap titans" I was hesitant to believe this could be true, but let it be said, this demo CD proved me wrong.’

Their first demo, recorded 2 years ago received critical acclaim from respected and the largest zines of their type i.e. Punktastic.com, TheSka.co.uk and Do The Dog. The whole demo was placed online in February 2004 and has since had over 10,000 downloads. However live is where Random Hand are at their best and reviews always point to a mesmerizing stage show and great songs, Punktastic called RH ‘a genuinely fantastic live band’.

The four-piece consists of lead vocalist and trombonist, backed up vocally and musically by thunderous guitars and driving drums to create a sound that will blow you away. The Random Hand sound ranges heavy political skacore to Eastern European ska/punk. Describing Random Hand has brought comparisons of ‘King Prawn fronting The Specials’ or a ‘Capdown meet System Of A Down’ but I think Ben Punktastic says it best with ‘…right now they don’t sound like anyone else.’.

PRIME MOVER (from Halifax)

Prime Mover formed at the beginning of 2005, and have recently completed their debut album, "Dead In A Second". It has been described as a mix of
punk/gothic/industrial, and the band are now looking to translate it to a
live audience.

This will be the bands first gig.

The line-up is as follows;
Dregs - Vocal, Guitar
Gobiashi - Synth
GPK - Bass
Hannah - Keyboard
Katz - Drum

January 6th ROYAL OAK

Entry for this Friday's gig before 9pm just £3 & £4 after!!!
Edward Molby...
"an unholy hybrid of Pixies, Husker Du and 12th Century madrigals from the remote Yorkshire moors-"
The Fly
"...highly accomplished musicians who nontheless choose to work in a proto punk style, a classic power unit who initially seemed hellbent on clearing out audience earwax with cheesewire, but who these days are equally as likely to drop brooding doom as strafe you with melodic dum dum bullets."
News From Nowhere

Ruby Tombs:
Ruby Tombs are: William Rook, Bobby Sparrow and Lauralee.
This trashy northern three piece is influenced by human nature, everyday existence & the urban landscapes of Yorkshire. The 2nds, a bunch of 16 year olds who we first saw 3 months ago opened up, and showed loads of promise. Next up were Ruby Tombs, whose debut single is out in Feb. Interesting and entertaining stuff lead with some style by their lead singer. Finally, Edward Molby who were simply rockin, what great songs delivered with verve by the legend that is Andy Greaves.

And a decent size crowd too.

Next Up

We think we’ve got another good line-up for our February 3rd gig. Prime Mover from Halifax play their debut gig. We really like their first demo and they shouldn’t be missed. Next up are ska punksters Random Hand. Finally we’ve got Vinny Peculiar. Vinny was originally due to play for us in October before we hit venue probs. Vinny Peculiar is a singer-songwriter of expertly crafted vignettes of the ironies, agonies and ecstasies of every day existence. We find ourselves to be in agreement on many
matters, but not all. We are united by a love of raw noise and the punk
ethic. We want to play gigs to people that we don't know personally and we
know we should eat more rare steak.

www.deadat27.tk
Dead at 27 formed late in the month of December 2002. As the nights got
darker sooner, and the sensible animals hibernated, four guys with
separate, yet equally magnificent talents came together and played in unison,
producing some of the worst sounds known to mankind.

Steve met Paul at a rock club, but instantly wished he hadn't when Paul
promptly vomitted before him. The next gig is on September 2nd and features a band from Bristol called Sex Machina. We confidently predict that this band are going to make it as there demo CD is top stuff. In years gone by I was lucky to receive first demos from Billy Bragg, Wedding Present, Pop Will Eat Itself and PJ Harvey. All stood out as destined for success, and Sex Machina are the same. More info on them soon but check out their website and tunes at www.sexmachina.co.uk

Support will be from local band Dead At 27. Amsterdam is expensive and a hopeless place to get your shit together, Halifax on the other hand isn’t. It’s great to be home, mainly because we know that we are moving to London in August. We don’t sound like other bands because we don’t have a drummer, well we do but he sings and plays guitar, so we use record players and records instead.

Summer Holiday are the morning after Simon & Garfunkel pulled Missy Elliot at a rave in Northern England. It has now developed into a band with
Martin as the creative core. The line up now includes

Dan Bailey (drums, percussion)
Stuart Robertson (Bass guitar)

The band is named after a relative of Martin's girlfriend
who is often reffered to as 'Unclejohnny'. He suffers from a mild
form of Autism called Aspergers Syndrome. Amongst other
eccentricities he is a collector of junk and his home
is normally full of things he finds, buys from charity shops,
takes from bins or finds in skips. Many of the Unclejohnny songs
take their inspiration from the life of this relative.

The songs themselves are produced with no mind for whatever
genre they seem to fit. Guitars are a main feature in the music
but any sound or any instrument is essentailly fair game.

The intention is always to be as honest as possible with the
music and create something interesting each time. Although
there is no direct intention to create an ecclectic sound in
the same way that Beck does, there is still a desire to try
new sounds in different contexts.

Unclejohnny does not profess to being the GREATEST BAND IN
THE WORLD. They simply want to create great music and are
prepared to put an enormous amount of passionate energy
into achieving that goal.

Unclejohnny is currently in rehearsals for two upcoming gigs
in June.

LATEST NEWS + PIX

Catch It Kebabs+ Jonjo Feather

What a gig! We’d particularly welcome help to get posters around Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden areas.

Sexmachina

Just in… the best demo we’ve received yet (even better than Uncle Johnny’s and Summer Holiday). Sex Machina are a Bristol band who sent us their demo and we are sure they are destined for big things. We’ve managed to pencil them in for our October gate. Listen to them on their website at www.sexmachina.co.uk

Sneeze

on the last Friday of the month currently at the same venue is Sneeze. It’s a bit different from the dog house, but they usually have a live band on as well as free noodles at 10pm and a mix of funk, ska, hip-hop etc.

catch it kebabs + jonjo feather

www.catch-it-kebabs.com
Catch-It Kebabs Biography
''Fuelled by the need to skank, several rejects from around the country descended on the unsuspecting town of Barnsley to study music technology. Shortly after their sentence had begun they decided to start up a ska band to bring a little joy into this town of insanity. Formed in April 2001, Catch-It Kebabs have since built a strong live following through regular gigging around the Yorkshire area. They have shared stages with many illustrious names from the UK & international ska scenes such as The Toasters, Lightyear, King Prawn, King Django, Rude Bones, The Slackers, Pama International, Zen Baseballbat, The Splitters & Smoke Like A Fish.

Having developed the skill of entrancing audiences with a frantic live stage show & super catchy songs, word of the Kebabs began to spread fast within the UK ska scene. April 2004 saw the band make the jump to national recognition with the release of their debut full length album, "Skankin' Sausages" on Do The Dog Music, backed by a full UK tour. Their 9 piece outfit consists of 2 vocalists, a rhythm section of drums, bass, guitar & keyboards, and a 4 piece brass section. The Catch-It Kebabs' sound ranges from blazing ska/punk & peppy 2 tone to surging 3rd wave ska & sassy swingcore. Bringing to mind a rampant fusion of Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Porkers, The Pietasters, Cherry Poppin Daddies & The Scofflaws, their big, bold, brassy melodies & highly contagious live swagger look set to garner this Barnsley crew many more fans across the UK & global ska scenes!''

Dog Story News - June 2005 –

Shaggy Dog Story News - June 2005 –

Welcome

Thanks to those of you who made it to the Lark and Uncle Johnny gig. We thought Uncle Johnny (after a shaky start) showed real promise with what was their gig. The jury’s out with Lark. From feedback it seems that people either really enjoyed them or thought they were a bag of shite.

Music At Gigs

If you would like to make a compilation cd of your favourite songs played before or after the bands play at the dog house, please email us at lordofbellhall@ainsworth9430.freeserve.co.uk . We’d love to hear from you.

Tom Russell

If this comes off, and at this stage its probably 50:50 this would stand as nothing short of a major, major coup. Tom Russell is a 50+ yr old who lives on the Mexican/Texas border. For the past 30 years he’s recorded what is probably described now as Americana style music. In addition to writing songs for the legend that was/is Johnny Cash, writing for other greats including Emy Lou Harris and Nanci Griffith, Tom was a friend of Charles Bukowski. In the spirit of nothing ventured.. we’ve asked Tom if he wants to play a dog house special at the end of September when he’s next in the UK. At the time of writing this we will know in the next day or so.

Next Gig

Our next gig is on July 1st and will be our best and most eclectic line-up yet. First off will be Summer Holiday who sent us a really good demo. Have a look at http://hxmusic.blogspot.com in a couple of days to read about them in their own words.

The main band will be The Revelator Band (formerly Blues Revelator). This promises to be a truly great gig (and very busy) as their reputation is pretty immense. Have a look at www.bluesrevelator.com . We did consider putting the price up to £5 (it was £7/8 to see them when they last played the Trades Club in HB) but we decided to peg back to £4 b4 945 and £5 after, but please if you are coming, get there in time to see Summer Holiday at 945, we think the gig is going to be busy.

Finally

If you can help us by putting up a poster in your local shop, newsagent, chippy, work, office etc do let us know. We are working really hard to get the dog house name established so any help would be great (we will give you free entry at a gig in return!).

Thanks
Michael & Shack

buen chico + blah blah tin

www.buenchico.com

www.buenchico.com

blah blah tin band biog follows...
................................................................................
a mutual urge to create interestingly inept music
pushed together bbt in a small Pennine town
roughly september last
with beat machines, guitars and cheapo keyboards
words fly out and settle in place as per M62 flows
born of boredom with ideas-bereft young groups
the viddy projected has the meanings you ascribe it
(no? Local funk-troubadours Modeliste headline, with support from Wrath Records aviation influenced pop-merchants Being 747.

After some shenanigans involving a giant plastic plane on one of the members head, Being 747 take to the stage and open with recent single "The Girl Who Fell Asleep While Watching Her Life Flash before Her Eyes" and instantly impress. Combining Fall-esque guitar passages with weird, robotic keyboard noises and some energetically tight drumming (with all three members contributing to singing duties) the trio create a distinctive, accessible sound. After a brief introduction to their forthcoming concept album based around the work of David Attenborough's work on the evolution of lizard-life (???) Being 747 canter through a few more of their classics including a rousing rendition of "Weathergirl" and leave us appreciating their quirky post-pop sensibilities.

Headliners Modeliste are admittedly an entirely different kettle of chips to Being747 with their fusion-fuelled take on funk rock. However the band certainly doesn't disappoint as some excellent bass-twiddling and Gene Krupa-inspired drumming provide the backbone for some captivating funking about. The addition of a live saxophonist also gives the performance some extra pizazz. The band are obviously a very talented outfit and keep the pace and the audiences attention throughout. I'm afraid I can't remember specific song titles but the set as a whole is well paced and a cover (think it might have been of James Brown?) goes down well.

An excellent night, and hopefully the shape of things to come for the Royal Oak as a music venue.

Review written by: Nick Kearns
Related Links
www.modeliste.co.uk
www.being747.co.uk

Live music returns to halifax

the dog house
- live music returns to Halifax –

January 11th 2005 Press Release

For the first time since 1992, Halifax will have a regular live music venue. The dog house is the name for a new venue to be based upstairs in the Royal Oak, Clare Road. One of the people behind the new venue is Michael Ainsworth, one of the founders of the now legendary Return Club which ran in the town between 1989 to 1992. It seems hard to believe now that bands such as Pulp played at the club (not once but three times) and that artists such as PJ Harvey sent the club demos to get a gig, and Michael hopes that the dog house will be just as successful although this time round he’s hoping for a more eclectic range of bands appearing.

Michael is to run the dog house with Shack, another ‘veteran’ of the Halifax music scene. Their aims and motivations are quite simple, “we both love listening to music and seeing bands play a small and intimate live venue will be exciting, we want the dog house to be for people who share those interests” commented Shack.

Michael believes “Halifax should have a live venue that gives bands from the area and region the chance to play in front of an appreciative audience”. As for the type of music you can expect to hear at the dog house, Michael has this to say, “we both have different and wide tastes in music and we want to put on anything from ska to low-fi to alt-country, hip-hop and alternative rock”.
There will be 2 bands playing each gig (taking place on the first Friday of the month) and admission will be pay on the door. Any band interested in playing should contact 01422 343781 or email lordofbellhall@ainsworth9430.freeserve.co.uk
